چکیده

Abstract One of the largest nesting colonies Vulnerable loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta is in Cabo Verde. Here we present first comprehensive study on island Maio During 2016–2019 monitored 38 km undeveloped sandy beaches that have minimal artificial lighting and where all takes place. We counted 4,063 nests 2016, 5,429 2017, 14,364 2018 7,937 2019. The estimated total number females was 1,016, 1,357, 3,591 1,984 each these years, respectively. Our findings suggest there are more turtles Verde than previously estimated, this could be species’ subpopulation (followed by Florida, USA Oman). inter-annual hatching success (the proportion eggs producing hatchlings) 29–38% for whole but varied between sites. 250 clutches showed flooding affected 38–61% predation crabs 40–42%, with different range 1–59%. Poaching rare (< 2% clutches), dogs predated 68.4% beach nearest human settlement. evaluated nest management strategies at multiple sites productivity hatchlings would reach strategy), finding hatcheries not always best option management. As relatively undisturbed, a high abundance density nests, should protected as globally important site conservation turtle, coastal biodiversity broadly.

Decreasing annual nest counts in a globally important loggerhead sea turtle population.

The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nests on sand beaches, has both oceanic and neritic life stages, and migrates internationally. We analyzed an 18-year time series of Index Nesting Beach Survey (Index) nest-count data to describe spatial and temporal trends in loggerhead nesting on Florida (USA) beaches. The Index data were highly resolved: 368 fixed zones (mean length 0.88 km) were s...

Gas Exchange in the Loggerhead Sea Turtle

Pulmonary CO diffusion capacity ( D L C O ) , lung volume (VL), oxygen uptake (Vo ) and pulmonary blood flow (QL) were measured simultaneously in the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta (Linnaeus) (8—11 kg) using a gas rebreathing technique (syringe pump ventilation). Calculated D L C O and Vo values in the loggerhead turtle are approximately twice those of non-varanid reptiles and about 25 %...

Description of cloacoscopy in the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta)

The aim of the study was to describe cloacoscopy in the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and to evaluate its efficacy in clinical practice. Cloacoscopy was performed on 31 turtles, 23 females and 8 males. Thirty minutes before anaesthesia, meloxicam (0.4 mg/kg) was administered intramuscularly. Turtles were anaesthetised with a combination of 0.04 mg/kg dexmedetomidine and 4 mg/kg ketamine a...

Long-Term Climate Forcing in Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nesting

The long-term variability of marine turtle populations remains poorly understood, limiting science and management. Here we use basin-scale climate indices and regional surface temperatures to estimate loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Borrowing from fisheries research, our models investigate how oceanographic processes influence juvenil...
